Closed-Chest Heart Surgery at Saint Joseph

02/08/2010

The Saint Joseph Heart Institute at Saint Joseph Hospital, Lexington, KY, is using robotic technology to perform closed-chest heart surgeries that were traditionally open-chest procedures. Using da Vinci robotic technology, surgeons at Saint Joseph now typically make three incisions of less than one centimeter, with no need for a traditional 10-inch incision, split in the breastbone or retractor to separate the ribs. As a result, patients experience less pain, faster healing and shorter hospital stays. In addition to heart surgery, the two da Vinci robots at Saint Joseph offer less invasive options for prostate cancer treatment, gynecological surgery and several other procedures.
